Why it Matters

Clean water is essential for healthy reefs, thriving marine life, and our communities.

When pollutants enter the ocean, they can harm coral reefs and impact the places where we swim, fish, surf, and gather. Over more than a decade of monitoring, we've confirmed sediment pollution now exceeds state health standards at every site we track.

Hui O Ka Wai Ola brings together volunteers, scientists, and community partners to protect Maui Nui's coastal waters.

Together, we collect and share trusted water quality data that helps identify pollution, track changes over time, and inform decisions that protect our ocean and the people who depend on it.

Our quality-assured data is made publicly available on our website shared with the Hawaiʻi Department of Health, Maui County, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and many other agencies, providing trusted information that helps guide actions to improve water quality.

Your support makes this work possible. Every donation helps provide water quality testing, laboratory analysis, volunteer training, and the coordination needed to keep this community science program going.
