The report summarizes changes—both improvements and declines—in water quality over eight years of data collection and confirms that measurements at sites in the Lahaina area remain within normal ranges.

Liz Yannell, the Hui’s program manager, pointed out that “Concern over increased erosion and runoff after the fire resulted in the application of a soil stabilizer and extensive best management practices to reduce runoff. Though this could not prevent all runoff, our data confirms that the actions helped to protect ocean water quality.”

Hui O Ka Wai Ola—a coalition of highly trained community volunteers who monitor water quality every three weeks and a group of scientists who analyze the data they collect—is coordinated by Maui Nui Marine Resource Council (MNMRC), The Nature Conservancy (TNC), and West Maui Ridge to Reef Initiative (R2R). The data they collect are added to Hawai'i Department of Health (DOH) water quality data to provide a more complete understanding of coastal waters. In addition, the group provides support to academic and government partners to do deeper dives on contaminants at specific sites. They have been integral post fire in collecting advanced water quality data to support the response.

Since 2016, the Hui has collected and analyzed over 4,300 water quality samples from 52 sites in leeward Maui and recently, Lāna‘i. Its findings confirm that the water clarity, referred to as turbidity associated with sediments and erosion, always exceed DOH standards, while nitrate levels, associated with fertilizers and wastewater, often exceed DOH standards. These land-based pollutants cause coral disease, brown water events and algae blooms that can impact the quality of people’s lives and can smother, weaken and kill coral reefs.

“By detecting changes in coastal water quality in real time, we are better able to respond to problems and measure the impacts of actions” reports Tova Callender, R2R’s Watershed and Coastal Management Coordinator. “For example, significant drops in nitrate levels at Kapalua following sewage upgrades indicate the effectiveness of this intervention. Further south, increasing turbidity levels in waters around Kīhei, where exploding deer populations are exacerbating erosion, point to an urgent need for improved ungulate management in mauka areas.”

The Hui’s easy to scan 2016-2023 Coastal Water Quality Report provides communities and decision-makers with a clear picture of West Maui’s coastal waters and includes recommendations for reducing dangerous pollutant levels. “The data in this report can help communities and groups like ours focus efforts on reducing pollutant levels in areas that need it most,” says Amy Hodges, Executive Director at MNMRC.

“If we want coral reefs to survive and thrive in the coming decades, we must reduce land-based stressors on them, which is a big and costly task,” notes Kim Falinski, TNC’s Coastal and Estuarine Scientist. “We appreciate the Department of Health’s trust and expertise in our organization over the years to help identify those threats. By helping to identify problem areas and show the effectiveness of interventions, Hui data is helping all of us—community groups, private organizations and government agencies—prioritize our limited investments and direct them toward efforts that will have the greatest impact on reducing land-based stressors on our reefs.”

To download a free copy of the Hui O Ka Wai Ola Coastal Water Quality Report 2016-2023, please visit https://www.huiokawaiola.com/findings.html

Lahaina Waters Safe for Ocean Recreation!

https://www.huiokawaiola.com/announcements/lahaina-waters-safe-for-ocean-recreation

https://www.huiokawaiola.com/announcements/lahaina-waters-safe-for-ocean-recreation#comments

Uncategorized

As of April 11, 2024, the Hawaiʻi Department of Health (DOH) confirms that the coastal waters around Lahaina are safe for ocean recreation. The DOH reviewed test results from multiple monitoring activities conducted by state agencies and community partners, and Hui O Ka Wai Ola helped collect samples to support this determination! On August 15, the Hui was able to restart sampling at 14 sites surrounding Lāhainā from Honolua Bay to Pāpalaua Pali. Monitoring within Lāhainā town was resumed on August 30, including four newly added sites (Mala Tavern, Mala Ramp, Papalaua St., and Lāhainā Harbor) and at three long-established sites (505 Front St., Kauaula Rd., and Polanui-Uhailio). Our South Maui sampling efforts have continued at the normal 3 week interval for 13 sites from Māʻalaea Harbor to ʻĀhihi-Kīnaʻu NAR.

Hui staff and volunteers have been trained in protocols to ensure their safety in case of pollution in the nearshore environment while monitoring and have required an escort into Lāhainā to access sites. We have also been able to create a new position, the Lāhainā Fire Response Team Lead, led by Christiane Keyhani, to coordinate the collection of physical parameters like temperature, pH, salinity, and dissolved oxygen, which are currently showing normal ranges. Other samples for heavy metals, volatile organic compounds, and semi-volatile organic compounds have been collected by the Hui for processing by partners who specialize in these parameters, findings yet to be released. We are also collaborating with Surfrider Blue Water Task Force and have collected two rounds of samples for them in Lāhainā and some other West Maui sites for enterococcus testing. Findings from their monitoring efforts can be found on their website: Blue Water Task Force (surfrider.org). Nutrients, including nitrogen and phosphorus, can indicate pollution from wastewater, run-off from agriculture, landscaping and/or golf courses. Once in the ocean, these nutrients can lead to an overgrowth of algae. Algae, particularly invasive species, quickly out-compete corals for sunlight and overrun large tracts of living reef.

Nutrient values can vary a lot over the course of a tide cycle -- low nutrient levels at high tide and higher nutrient levels at low tide. Sites with higher nutrient levels acquire these nutrients via ground water that comes into the ocean as underground "springs.”

The fact that there is fresh water coming in from underground springs over the course of a day is shown by the change in salinity readings. This explains the ever-shifting levels that we see from the data we collect once every three weeks at each site.

During our one day experiment we took 4 nutrient samples, with the first sample at high tide and the last sample near low tide. The accompanying chart (Figure 1) shows how salinity decreases as the tide goes out and the fresh water from underground springs comes in, while the nitrate levels increase as the amount of fresh water increases.

Our ongoing Hui O Ka Wai Ola water quality sampling program was designed to catch a variety of tide states so that we can understand not only the average level of nutrients but also the range of nutrient levels each site exhibits.

Another interesting observation is that other parameters vary during the day as well -- temperature rises as the sun comes up and heats the top layer of water and then starts to decrease as the sun goes down or if clouds come over (Figure 2). During our one-day experiment, temperatures varied over 2 degrees centigrade during the course of the day.

Figure 1. Dissolved oxygen is needed for aquatic plants and animals to survive. Corals are very sensitive to changes in ocean chemistry, including increased ocean water acidity (which results in a drop in pH levels).

During our 12 hour study, we found that in Cove Park and Hanaka‘ō‘ō Park these diurnal variations are not as obvious because of the influx of fresh ground water as the tide is going out which also affects levels of pH and DO. In general, pH and DO are at their lowest levels just as the sun rises due to the fact that photosynthesis has not been taking place overnight. CO2 levels rise at night as marine organisms respire, taking in oxygen and producing CO2. There is no photosynthesis at night so as CO2 levels rise, the water becomes more acidic and pH levels drop. Dissolved oxygen also drops because of a lack of photosynthesis that generates oxygen as a bi-product. Once the sun begins to rise, photosynthesis begins again, and the pH and DO levels rise.

Water quality monitoring during COVID-19

https://www.huiokawaiola.com/announcements/we-are-monitoring-water-quality-during-covid-19

https://www.huiokawaiola.com/announcements/we-are-monitoring-water-quality-during-covid-19#comments

Uncategorized

As of Monday, May 4, a small group of Hui O Ka Wai Ola staff members are monitoring coastal water quality at all 41 of our leeward Maui sample sites every three weeks.
